Improving offensive productivity will be a key to Bloomington Kennedy's girls hockey success this season. The Eagles are seeking help during the 2009-10 campaign.
Sophomore forward Leah Gefroh is expected to be one of Kennedy's top scorers. She was the team's top goal scorer last season and earned all-conference honorable mention recognition.
Gefroh picked up one assist in Kennedy's 3-1 opening game loss to Robbinsdale Cooper Nov. 14 at Bloomington Ice Garden. Freshman forward Beth Welna scored the Eagles' lone goal.
"We will look to score more this season," said Kennedy coach Dennis Wineberg. "We have moved junior Nichole Loranger from defense to forward and that should take some of the offensive pressure off Gefroh. We will be a faster, more experienced team than a year ago. Our goaltending, while young, should be up to the task."
Providing leadership are Kennedy junior tri-captains Loranger and defenders Casey Mach and Lauren Nelson.
Mach received all-conference honorable mention as a sophomore.
Kennedy returns 11 varsity letter winners, including its tri-captains. Other returnees are Gefroh, Welna, senior forward Talli Mazzoni, junior forward Emily Nelson, sophomore defender Hannah Crook, sophomore forward Brianna Mrozek, freshman forward Britta Mach and eighth-grade goalie Kayla Booth.
Varsity newcomers are junior forward Sarah Fredin, sophomore defender Kelsey McWilliams, junior forward Lauren Hoese and freshman defender Kay Mach.
"We have a strong defensive group with Casey Mach, Nelson and Crook back to help our newcomers," said Wineberg. "We expect this group to play more physically this year and minimize our opponents' scoring chances. This is the best depth we have had in my coaching career at Kennedy. The competition for varsity spots is strong. We should be a factor in all of our games and surprise our competition as the season progresses," added the Eagle coach.
Kennedy will host Irondale at 7:15 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 19, at BIG. The Eagles remain at home to battle Park of Cottage Grove at 2:15 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 21.
Kennedy plays intra-city rival Jefferson at 7:15 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 24.
Kennedy's junior varsity squad is expected to be strong according to Wineberg.
Eagle JV players are juniors Danni Brolsma, Anna Bresnahan and Caitlin Cole along with sophomores Alex Cole, Ana Cole, Mandy Dusing, Jill Haram, Kathryn McGaffey and Sam Olson.
Also on the Kennedy JV squad are ninth-graders Bailey Lundberg, Katie Wells, Layana Wright-Ponder, and eighth-graders Katie Gonyea and Katherine Landrum.
